Sold it! My screenplay--finalized deal this week!

Not 10%... the average total budget for script, all rewrites, underlying rights (if it's based on a novel or comic book or something) and the overhead cost for development is 5%.

Usually the script is somewhere between 2%-3% of the budget - but as budgets go up, the % tends to go down because so many other writers are used... or the cast budget just gobbles up everything.

Hi Kyle,

It's cool that you keep updating this thread.

Sorry if I'm beating the same drum here, but given that time has elapsed since your feature sale, have you managed, or are thinking sometime in the future, about representation with either an agent or manager or both?

EJ

Actually, I haven't updated this thread at all. People keep posting on it. It's taken on a life of its own.

In fact, my agent (who I signed with about 5 months ago, to answer one of your questions) and my attorney told me to remove all posts in reference to the script sale details. So, I removed several posts a few months back--as you may have noticed--leaving the thread anemic as hell, IMO. Oh, well.

I've been extremely busy juggling 3 scripts. More parties are getting interested in my work. I'll keep you guys posted if and when another sale is on the horizon.

Oh no! So have a lot of your useful tips, teachings and posts been taken away? Because there was so much good stuff in here to use as a reference. I'm glad I copy pasted some of it into word documents while I could. :(

It's taken me some time to get to but I've finally taken up your suggestion Kyle to copy entire screenplays by hand as a way of absorbing style. I chose The Shawshank Redepmtion to start with and quite frankly, at least for me, this process does take time. I've been trying to do between 30mins - 1 hr a day and after a month I'm close to FADE OUT -- obviously I'm a slow handwriter ;)

I have to say though, it's a great exercise. Once I've got a few more under my belt I'll post my observations here as to how it is assisting my own writing.

Awesome to hear. It IS a good way to learn, I agree.

And F. Darabont is a good person to learn from.

Keep us posted on your observations.

I used to write out stage plays when I was learning(Mamet, Shepard, Rabe, Pinter) the cool kids.
Hunter Thompson used to type out Hemingway novels when he was starting I believe. Copying screenplays gives you a feel that is hard to learn, if nothing else it teaches you brevity in your dialogue. I've used table reads of screenplays that really helped show the wincing moments. Richard Price is fun to copy (color of money, clockers, sea of love).

Really like the thread Kyle.

Kyle, just wanted to throw in my congratulations as well. Y'know, in case you haven't heard it enough. I actually just joined the DVXuser community in response to this thread. You guys all really seem awesome, and I'm looking forward to posting with you in the future ;) :2vrolijk_08:

also, i'm not 100% sure if it was you... but "you" wrote a list of the things that the first act should have in it... i can't find it anymore... if it was you that wrote it, do you know where you posted it?

thanks again..

sirj - once a script is sold the author no longer has a right to it and probably does not have the right to publish it online.

You need to ask someone here who has it on file.

I didn't mean Kyle's script.. if you look on page 16 of this thread you'll see that Kyle linked us to a file that had 120 different scripts to read and I wanted to download it, that's all.

Sirj - I don't have it either, so if anyone has this script on a file, mind sending it to Sirj and toss it over my way, too.

I’ve uploaded my copy of Kyle’s library here.

@Kyle
Belated thanks, by the way, for uploading in the first place – I think I downloaded it before I became a registered user here.
