Software used to log footage for documentary - AVCHD workflow

Just shot 168 gigs of AVCHD footage (2300 individual clips) over the past 3 weeks with my HMC40 and I am now left with the task of reviewing the footage in hope of using some of it to make a documentary. Footage is in folders on a 2tb HD. I'm familiar with the log and transfer process but need advice on how to document good shots before I get to this stage.

Wondering how folks would go about logging the footage and what software if any you'd use. I'm leaning towards watching the footage in VLC first then an Excel spreadsheet and perhaps a screen capture. I seem some programs for P2 workflows but none for AVCHD.
The log and transfer video window seems too small to review the footage and also I have to transcode the MTS file to add Meta data so this won't work.

Suggestions?

This is of no use to you now, but something worth consideration next time you do one of these projects. Well, if you dont mind going through your offloads again, it will provide a good start point to edit from.

have other people here used HD Log? i'm thinking of getting it. The price tag is steep - $300 - so I'd love to hear first from others who have used it before taking the plunge myself.
