Software to edit commercial dvds

Hey guys...

In my off time, I've been thinking of editing a few previously released feature films to my own liking (for personal use, not for me to sell). My question is, is there a program out there that will rip a DVD into files I can then import into Avid Xpress or Premiere Pro?

For example, Peter Jackson's King Kong, a very long movie. For fun (again, not for me to profit from)... I'd like to import it into Premiere Pro and edit it into a shorter, more compact movie.

Is there anything out there that can allow me to do this? Can't stress enough... not trying to sell the finished product, just want it for my personal enjoyment.

Thanks!

if you are using pc there was a little tool i used to use to backup my movies for use in the car called DVD shrink (My car DVD player used to like to eat the top off of the dvd's). It removed the copy protection in its bit making any program able to read the vob's.

I do not at all condone piracy, but I do condone protecting your original, this might be a step in your approach. there are many freeware apps to convert an unprotected DVD to whatever format you wish. Since I now use a mac, i cannot tell you what to use for encoding the vobs, but im sure you will find something. if you arte on a mac, I have used DVD shrink in bootcamp to unprotect a DVD I made in a sony DVD recorder and imported it on the mac via MPEG streamclip....I have not found a copy protection stripper for the mac, one reason I got rid of the sony dvd recorder.

Check out www.videohelp.com for some tools to do this.

Keep in mind that if you live in the United States, the horrid Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes bypassing digital copy protection illegal, even if you are exercising your own rights (making a backup copy, etc).
