Software for converting VOB files to AVI?

Hey,

A client wants me to make a montage of some random band footage and has given me loads of video dvds.

These naturally show up as VOB files. I was wondering what people are using these days to get them to AVI's for editing?

I've done some googling and all manner of dodgy programs comes up and I'm thinking there's got to be a better way.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply.

I tried using Virtualdub but it gave me an error whenever I tried to do a direct stream copy, which was what I was told one needs to to avoid massive file sizes (1gb/min)

Hi,

I have and use Vegas for all sorts of editing. Many of the vob files are muxed mpegs of MPEG2 video and MPEG audio files that you can just change the vob extension to mpg and load into Vegas and edit.

Vegas has a fully functional trial you can download at Sonymediasoftware.com.

I have Ulead (Corel) VideoStudio Pro X2 which can rip a Video DVD to a timeline, too - very handy for this sort of thing. It, too, has a fully functional trial and highly recommended. I make high definition, menu-ed DVDs that play on Blu-ray discs with this program that I have edited in Vegas or Premiere.

You can also download Super© It isn't the best but it is free. You will have to scrounge around at the site to find the download, but the program is worth having for some of the things it can do, if not for the VOB converter. It isn't the best way to do this, but it is free.

Another option that works great is TMPGEnc Xpress 4.0. You can import the entire disc to your hard drive with audio. This option is about $100, but the encoder is just about the best on the market regardless of price and you'll find uses for it nearly every day.

Good luck.

Rejig to demuliplex,
VirtualDybMob to transcode to AVI
BeSSweet to Transcode the audio

Very Fast and Clean but difficult to learn workflow
