softboxes

How good are the Photoflex Softboxes? What is a good size to consider? I would be using it for interviews. I am also considering the Chimera softbox as well.

Re: softboxes

I have a couple of Photoflex softboxes and find them to be pretty well made.  They're not quite up to the quality of Chimera (and the speed rings are a bit crude), but they work for me.  I have a Silverdome and a Cinedome.  The Cinedomes are deeper and work well with fresnels.  The Silverdomes are a good solution for open-faced lights.  I'd recommend the medium if you're only going to have a single size.

Re: softboxes

Lately, I've been using a small Cinedome a lot on my Arri 650. It gives a nice quality of light and it's great for tight spaces. However, I'd still recommend the medium if you're only planning to get one box.

Re: softboxes

I have the Chimera VideoPro XS & use it with my Arri 650 (it came with the kit.) It's compact & works great in tight spaces. Friday, I went by Chimera's office/manufacturing facility in Boulder, CO to try out some egg-crates with my lights. It was kind of fun. Set up my lights in their office & they kept bringing out different egg-crates & softbanks to try out.

Seeing the facility, the machinery, the people, I was really impressed with their operation. Besides the egg-crate, I bought a new ring to use my soft box on the 300 watt fresnel.

While I didn't have a preference before going there, I did after leaving.

Re: softboxes

No question, Chimera makes quality products. Those egg-crates come a dear price. They should call 'em Faberge egg-crates.
