Softbox

I want to buy a 1000k softbox. Not HMI. Could somebody make a recommendation please? Anybody own ALZO? They're prices look good but I wonder if I shouldn't just buy an Arri. Thanks.

Some time back I picked up a 1K softbox on Ebay for just over $100, with stand.
A company called Amvona runs auctions on lighting/photo equipment, with about 1500
auctions on at a given time. Sometimes there is little competition for these, such as on auctions ending in the middle of the night, or on holidays. My softbox uses a mogul base
tungsten bulb and came with a nice stand with casters that goes up to 13' or so.
Check out this link for some of their present auctions:

They are even starting to sell a line of fluorescent fixtures.

All of the softboxes besides Chimera are at least semi-disposable, you get what you pay for. The Amvona stuff is pretty junky, yes, it's low cost, but here you REALLY get what you pay for.

PhotoFlex - I have one. It's cheap and kind of junky. Nothing wrong with the quality of light but they don't last.

Chimeras? Expensive and worth it. My medium was bought in 1996, still going strong. Two of my small Chimeras were bought in 2001, still going strong, no yellowing, no torn or separated seams.

Best,

Dan

Yes, that's the main issue I have with the Rifas. They work great, I shot all of the interviews for an A&E Biography I did a few years ago with one, but the egg crates are a definite ripoff for the Rifas.

You are also stuck with a single wattage on a Rifa. I use my 300, 650 and 1k, all in the same Chimera. The kit from B&H comes with the Mogul base but you can always add a light fixture and a speed ring to it as well if you need higher/lower output.
