Hi, I have a Pelican hardcase for my HVX but sometimes it's a bit bulky. I'm looking for a nice affordable softcase to use in an upcoming field project. Any suggestions? thanks in advance!!!
Are you looking for something just for the HVX or something a little bigger that you can put the HVX in with a mattebox etc attached?
For taking just the camera with me without a mattebox I have a Porta Brace DV3U.
For something that I can keep the mattebox on and pile in a bunch of other stuff, I have a Porta Brace DV02U
Honestly most of the time when I'm running around in prairies or forests, I carry the camera in the DV3U. Its pretty much become my main bag.
Now, if I'm going on a long hike somewhere like in Yellowstone or Arches, I have a LowePro Phototrekker and LowePro Super Phototrekker that I used in my still photography days that I retrofitted for the HVX. I can make everything I own including the kitchen sink in the Super Phototrekker and it has a great harness system that makes lugging all that stuff as easy as it can be.
Now you don't even want to know about the time when I was making the switch from still photography to video and I lugged both systems with me all over the place.
Hey Kevin,
Getting ready to track and trap (for research purposes) jaguars, margays, ocelots and jagarundi's in the mountains and jungles of Mexico and possibly in the SW US if we can find them for a documentary. Does the supertrekker allow you to keep the matte box attached? That sure would help trekking in some rather in-hospitable places.
Jim,
No, it's not deep enough. I did carry mine around with the rails on and just slid the mattebox on. It was pretty quick but not quite as fast as if it were already attached.
Sometimes I'd keep a 4X4 in the mattebox, slide it on and was shooting in less than a minute easily.
Heck, it took me longer to get the pack off and unzipped than it did to put the box on and start shooting.
Still, for carrying a long way, I'm glad I had it.
Try the Kata MC-61, best bag I have ever had. Big enough to carry my HVX, 17" laptop, Batteries, Mic, cables etc... including a smaller tripod, but small enough to be a carry-on luggage. You can also get an optional set of wheels to make it easy on your back. I just traveled to Europe with it, great bag... this is the one to get.
Didn't work for me. The case is supposed to be 15.7" in interior length but the one I got was 14.2" at the maximum point. It would have been a snug fit at 15.7".
I'm returning it.
The bag is very well made. I may go for the Kata CC-193.
