I hear many wannabe filmmakers talk about using social media as a primary marketing method for their films; how realistic is this? I know it can grab some attention, but does anyone have numbers on success rates? I just don't see this happening. Am I way off here?
I do know some folks who make modest/no budget horror. A project a year for better part of a decade and it works for their limited needs. That’s with a small but loyal fan base.
Social media is of course extremely effective for marketing. One star on Instagram or Twitter or TikTok or YouTube can expose you to millions and millions of eyes overnight.
Celebrities get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars by companies to write a few characters about their products and services.
With that said...I'm assuming you're asking about how realistic its impact is if it's done by basically nobodies...and the answer to that is probably pretty unrealistic.
It's just very tough; there's no rhyme or reason why some films or people succeed much more than others.
