You know what I really like which may catapult me out of weddings...Live production.

I was scheduled to record a live caravan event this weekend but instead of recording to tape and editing later like I usually do I decided to do something different.

I rent a video switcher and intercom system, hired to more student camera guys and recorded the event live , switching live, directing live and recording the output to a consumer DVD recorder and a consumer palmcorder as a analog line video feed.

Each camera was also record to tape incase I screwed up the switching.

For audio I had a direct stereo feed coming from the mixer as well as a couple of mics setup for ambience.

Sweet ... went off with out a hitch....

No editing I simply handed the completed video with stock menus that come with the recorder to the client at the end of their performance. Done thats it. What a relief to complete a project in a day.

Directing has so much more control instead of hoping your partner is getting the shot you want. it is easier on the staff because they have breaks when they are not on program to setup and find a please shot.

Non linear editing is like making a mix tape compare to a live DJ reacting dynamically to the crowd.

I know this is not new broadcasters have been doing this from the beginning. But, I think this concept is new for the small guy like me.

cost wise the rental of the switcher wasn't bad, the clear com intercom set was peanuts and the money spent on the 2 extra camera people paid for itself in the editing time.

The only thing missing was text and graphics but in the future I will a student to run that too and chroma key that info into the mix.

I would encourage any small aspiring videographers or editors to volunteer at your local cable station see how they do things and copy it in a mini form and try being your own director. It can only lead to career developing skills and experience.

Look at them yoyo's...That's the way you do it..you use a swither and talk on the com....That aint workin, that's the way you do it...let me tell ya that system aint dumb!

Sounds like a hoot man, the last gig I was on last week was a live webcast and they didn't have the brains to rent com so I had a few tape balls whipped at my back to tell me when I was live and stuff....Never again!

If you're interested in shooting live events, you'd find the Sony AWS-G500 Anycast Station (that rents locally here in Boston for about $600/day) an interesting option. This is a very cute device that some folks I know have used for recording live events. It's a standard definition video switcher and audio mixer with tally and 4-wire intercom support packed into a portable case and designed for producing live shows with a minimum of equipment. A single LCD display shows program and preview outputs as well as windows for each individual input source. While recording the event, each signal source can be recorded to an external hard disk, (two primary input sources per video interface board) to external FireWire hard disk drives. For example, with two hard disk drives, four primary inputs can be recorded, providing an option for re-editing of the material, if desired. Inputs include analog composite, S-video, DV input, balanced audio, and computer RGB. And if you're into webcasting the event, the Anycast can be fitted with an optional Real Video streaming encoder and Helix DNA streaming server. This is the first all-in-one video switching solution I've seen that's got almost every bell and whistle you would want in it's price/performance category.
