All kidding aside, the quotes are intentional (it's not a Bolex at all) and Blackmagic (a real company with a stellar history) just blew them away at everything they said they wanted to do. Are they dead in the water?
I dunno if this is a flame-y topic, but damn i'm waiting to read this thread... I thought that the second the BM thing came out.
Honestly, if I were to answer that question, I wouldn't make a 3000 camera purchase unless I had like 10 grand. So yeah I guess I'd bump it up to 15 and buy both when i have that. This is all IF I had any money.
The Bolex's plus would be that it's a ccd. is it a ccd? or is that just the ikonoskop?
The look and vibe. For certain jobs could sell. I've met a couple of cuckoos who will want to 'pick' the camera and it could probably speak to them in the night. It sounds silly but seriously, the 'Bolex' thing could work for 1 out of 10 gigs.
If it's a CCD then it's a different machine, but I'm not sure if it is or isn't...
Mounting? I like c-mounts. Can use 16mm zooms. Loike those. Plus for me over 35mm lenses cropped out or something.
hmmm.... yeah not much really. We should be thinkin up loads of these by now yeah? Where's the mod with the list of things d16 does?
hmmm... maybe BM really did dent it, if so then I honestly all joking aside feel pretty bad for the Bolex guys.
Shallower flange depth, more lens mounting choices. Surely this will be addressed by Blackmagic (I noticed the "models" tab on the webpage with but one model) but for now the Bolex has this one.
I really had forgotten about those two bits. Anything else? I've always felt the dorky retro thing was a BIG negative on the Bolex, but then I'm a professional and not a college kid.
I know man. Same. but honestly, marketing departments can be a bit crazy. Maybe it's where I am, but they can really opt for it to count what camera to use. If it's an artsy project, just a tad, all it takes is for the director to have a theory on the aura of the vintage body and how it'll do something intrinsic for the shoot etc etc. I've seen ppl ask for harinezumis on a shoot once.
I dunno tho. Still not sure if it's CCD.
The lens mount option is making the decision way tougher when I think about it. I don't have much canon or nokin glass. I like the smaller coverage options. C mounts on a gh1 were my fave for a while.
I guess the dorky retro thing worked with me when it came to those tiny c mounts... had this fantasy of carrying my lens kit on a keychain.

But yes, agree, advantages are CCD and flange depth... oh man, I think that there's space enough on the market for both, but the Bolex folks had better be careful that they don't miss any deadlines or there will likely be mass exodus to Blackmagic.
This thing seems great, but it really is for a niche crowd. I guess they're not about making money or anything... I mean to be honest this thing is like taking the cliche of retro hipster to an extreme. Let's make a really cool advanced camera, make it look like an old novelty film camera.
Not sure how this would hold up on a regular or pro film set. Not in term of image, but respect. When shooting commercials, and the client is on set, they say to put on the matte box just to look more pro. Imagine the client walks on set and see this thing.
I get their angle, but if they're trying to make an "affordable" digital camera, DSLRs kinda beat them to the punch. Not nearly the same resolution/quality, but DSLRs are the Bolex's of modern day IMO. Maybe it's just me though, but I assume way back when, no one shot on Bolex's primarily because it was a raw image...
