So Screwed... Help.

HELP!

Okay... I did a 5 disk DVD set. There are about 4 hours of footage per disk.
Compressed with compressor one pass fast encode 150 min adjusted to 3.0 - 7.0 vbr.

Data fits on disks, but is skipping. Played fine for me, but the client says they are skipping.

I MUST get these out asap.

I need advice.... DO you think the one pass jacked me? Or was it the fast encode?
is the VBR okay? Or could it be that?

I have one chance to get this right....

HELP.

Thanks.

Well i think that 4 hours per disk is WAY too much information. Personaly, I don't go over 2.5 hours per disk, so try and spreading that over more dvd's.

What speed are you burning the disks?

OK, just think this through -

You say it played fine for you. Did you really actually sit down and watch all 20 hours of footage on the DVD's? If your client needed 20 hours, I guess he has his reasons, and I assume he's actualy watched it all.

I had a similar problem with a bad batch of supposedly good discs I bought once. Client needed thirty copies. I played some of the first to check it and it seemed fine... all the rest just skipped all over the place, and I got them back with an angry letter. Bought a different brand and burned again. Didn't recompress, changed nothing except the discs. Everyone was happy.

So, first step... calm your client down. Tell him it may be the discs and you'll have to replace them. Can you get them back from him to check if there is any physical damage to them? Not your fault. It happens. You'll do whatever it takes, you've never had a complaint before. Ask him if he can see any marks or scratches on them. Take some pressure off yourself.

If you can get a different brand, get the best you can find, try them. Burn one. Then actually LOOK at the disc itself. Does it look normal? Hold it at different angles to the light. Play it right through, or at least play random parts right from start to finish.

If you have time you could try dual layer and compress to a higher quality...

Try setting the burn speed as low as you can.

Make sure they are clean before handing them over.

Try them on a friends player.

Are you using + or - R... how old is your clients DVD player?

Remember, that the laser on a DVD burner starts decaying after 24 months.

We had this issue all over my university with the macs burning discs that were hardly readable on most DVD players.

Also cheap media can be the culprit.
