So Pissed Right Now.

I have offered my sister, who has a Master's in education, to submit her name for on set tutor for those child actors working on set.

Her response? "What do they make, normally?"

Uh, guess what? You have never done this before and you have no track record. What are you willing to accept, including travel time? That is what I will put forward.

Errrrrrrrr!

I know what she is willing to accept as a daily rate, and it is way below the minimum. And good for her. But she wants to play with the numbers. Major Mistake! Pad it a little, and still come under the competition.

That's how you succeed in business.

One child acting job leads to another thing which leads to another thing, never close an open door.

Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with her asking the question. It never hurts to get the info ahead of time.

But I would definitely low-ball and take the job. Like Charli said, one thing leads to another.

pretty much everyone wants to know what they'll make before they accept a job.

it seems like you're trying to lowball her because she is your sister.

I also don't believe someone with a masters degree should get paid any less than whatever the going rate is regardless of whom its is. I mean obvious exception for someone who has been teaching for 10 years. But low-balling or paying less than the expected base salary for someone with a masters degree is just plain cheap and wrong. Also, not someone I'd want to work for.

Somehow I don't see what's wrong with the question.

Whenever someone talks about a job to me 'what's the rate?' is usually one of the first questions I'm going to ask.

Look, everyone sometimes has to decide whether or not they're going to quote low to get the gig. That's her decision to make and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that rate is sometimes where you win or lose.

Holding a Master's Degree might entitle you to sniff I have a Master's Degree when offered a low salary figure but it does not entitle you to expect only offers which you might find agreeable.
