So of all the NLEs...

... you guys would say Vegas is the way to go? It sounds good. I've been using Premiere for a few years. I was playing around with Avid for a few hours and I feel that the timeline makes me edit slower than with the Premiere timeline (does anyone else feel that way about Avid?). I like to work fast. I'm more creative that way. I know this is a Vegas forum so you guys might be a bit partial but out of Avid Xpress Pro 4.6 or Vegas... which one do you guys prefer and why?

if you think premiere lets you edit fast, then your in for a treat with vegas. I too was an "avid" premiere user (pun intended), but after learning vegas, have never looked back.

so i can trim, shrink clips, drag and drop, everything i could do in the timeline with premiere... i can do with vegas and more? looks like i may purchase this. what about vegas 6 though. I dont wanna buy vegas 5 when vegas 6 might be just around the corner... anyway, i've been reading up on vegas 5 on sony's site and it seems awesome....

oh and the 24p support actually works... haha

Did you find Avid's timeline restrictive and slow as well or did I just not spend enough time with it?

I hadn't used any editor extensively before; played with Premiere many years ago but that was it.

I downloaded the demos for both Premiere and Vegas and just had a play to see which one I got on best with.

I found Vegas so much easier and quicker to work with; the screens were more intuitive and the workflow suited me more coming from a musical background using sequencers.

I probably can't offer much of a comparison between editors, or even how good Vegas is, as I have only had a limited time using it and I'm still learning heaps about editing. But I'm managing to create the look and effects that I want really easy and having loads of fun at the sametime.

With Vegas 6 (potentially) just a few days away I'd hang in there and see what it has to offer.

I think if you buy Vegas 5 anytime between now and release of 6, you'll qualify for free upgrade to 6. Check the Vegas site, I would ...

And yes, you can do everything you can do with Premiere faster. You do them differently though, ie. there will be a learning curve, but there are things in Vegas that mean not having to go to After Effects any more - it's an amazing NLE.

So did anyone else find Avid's timeline restrictive and slow or did I not spend enough time with it? I spent a few hours and it seemed pretty slow to me. I didn't feel as free and in control as I did with Premiere.
As far as the Vegas timeline.. as long as i can do everything I could (and more = better) that i could do in premiere (even if it's done differently), i'm fine with it as long as the way you do it doesn't slow you down. Yeah.. I'm all about speed. But it sounds good so far.

Michael... are you sure about the free upgrade? I can't find anything about it on the site....

Thanks guys!

EDIT: I just read that Vegas doesn't support nesting timelines... that's a big issue for me. However... Vegas 6 does... so hopefully Vegas 6 will be out soon! I'm getting excited about Vegas. I'm going to DL the trial. Anyone know how long the trial lasts?

Disclaimer: Avid was the first NLE I ever used, and I'm still fanatically tied to Avid. I generally don't get into the "which NLE is better" discussions, because it's pretty much to the point where all of them can do the same work and it's user preference. But, since you asked this question three times, I'll chime in.

I would submit that you didn't spend enough time with it. Avid's interface allows me to work faster than any other NLE out there (and I've used them all). Avid is a keyboard interface, and if used as such is extremely fast and flexible.

Thanks Chris... I plan on going home and spending more time with Avid tonight on my friend's computer. It just feels weird not being able to move things around in the timeline by dragging and dropping. I will say that it does keep things in sync nicely.

I have yet another question about Vegas. Does it convert 24pn footage to the original 4 frames or is that just for 24pa? Thanks!

You actually can do that in Avid. Look up Segment Mode and Lift/Overwrite in the Help File for a starting point. If you have any more questions PM me so we're not filling up the Vegas board with Avid talk.

Yeah I should probably spend more time and learn how to use it well and not make assumptions. Still though, I'm trying to decide between Vegas and Avid. Hmmm.....

Vegas can be every bit as keyboard-oriented.

After Vegas 6, there's very little the other NLEs can claim over it (and much that Vegas can claim over THEM). I would not be surprised to find it grow tremendously in professional use.

Sorry, my mistake - there is no official deal at Sony. However I knew I'd read something somewhere so I did a quick search and I came across this which may interest you: If you buy Vegas 5 + DVD production suite for $599.95 from Videoguys you DO get a free upgrade to Vegas 6 + DVD. Check it out here ... http://www.videoguys.com/specials.html

Hope this helps (to quote Jan)

that's tempting. those guys are 20 minutes from my house.... and the cheapest i've seen Vegas on sale for.... hmmm.....

I can't comment deeply on Avid functions, cause i dumped it after a few days trying to understand how it works...

I could'n say if it is less or more prowerfull than others but the learning curve is extremely steep for me. I must confess i come from the multimedia word, not broadcast video. The Avid interface is about as criptic as an interface could be for me in the Windows word, and i work everydays with a lot of softwares. It also appear to be truly more tricky when importing different multimedia files types.

One more time, i would certainely not say that it's not a good NLE, but for me, it is just unapproachable and do not fit with my thinking of how a software should interact with a user... Maybe that many, many hours of learning could change that, but...

Premiere or Final cut are certainely much more intuitive, but when you just play with Vegas a few hours, you realize how much NLE editing can be soooo easy and intuitive! You want to do something? Just try it and bang!...it just work the same way you wanted to work... You don't need to try zillion of things or workaround, you just productively edit in minutes. After that, you can progressively discover how it is so powerfull, flexible and productive.

BTW, i'm unrelated to Sony... just an independant multimedia producer working everyday with Digital video.

DITTO.

When I first bought Vegas 4.0 about two years ago, I was up to speed in about two days - just installing it, reading the manual, and I was on my way.

I got to play with Avid Express - after a week, I still couldn't get it. And, like logiquem above, I work with a lot of software packages, and I am a software developer in my 'civilian', non-film, life.

I know Photoshop quite well, so I expected an easier learning curve with Premiere, but the same thing happened as with Avid - just not nearly as intuitive as Vegas.

If you want ease and speed of use, Vegas is the way to go.

Unless you are a professional editor who definitely has to use Avid because clients require it, and if you cannot affor the steep learning curve, stick with Vegas.

I just had to weigh in. I come from an audio background, so for me Vegas was a dream. It's functional "behavior" is very similar to a lot of audio stuff out there. Very intuitive. It's easy to use on the surface, but there is much more if you care to dig in. I've been on board since the Sonic Foundry days. When Sony got a hold of it.... that cinched the deal for me. Look at their track record. Once they grab something, they don't let go. (Mini disc for example!) I figure with their resources, Vegas will continue to be at the cutting edge. I too agree that you'll see massive professional use in the future. I'm looking forward to 6.0. Hope DVDA 3 takes it to the next level.
