So now I've shot my first wedding and reception

Learned a few things along the way.

1) Definitely need a fast, big Firewire or eSATA external HD for dumping cards. I tried using my old laptop, which does have a PC card slot, and was only able to dump one card. I thought that would be enough since I was shooting SD, but the toasts went on for almost half an hour (!), and there were two or three events not on the schedule.

How many people do Firewire dumps straight from the camera to a HD? Is that the way to go, short of Barry's cheap-Windows-laptop solution?

2) I need a better way of capturing sound. There was no way to patch into the band's sound, so we were left with what the shotgun could do. Tried to watch levels, but I know it's up and down, and all around, from wandering toward, away, and around the dance floor.

What's the best way to get consistent, solid audio from the stage (band, toasts, everything) without all the ambient noise? Would a parabolic mic on a light stand feeding into...something...work? This is beyond my ken at the moment. Just wondering as I type.

Suggestions?

3) The CB105 shoulder mount isn't for me. Even with the extra padding I added to it, it was still too wobbly and uncomfortable. Definitely just need to get the 361B monopod (only one that my Bogen quick release will work on), and I very much want to try out a Merlin.

4) The Litepanels Micro throws a lot more light than I realized. I was concerned about it blinding people, so I'd put a homemade diffuser over it, but I just couldn't see anything and took it off. VERY glad I did. Only a few people reacted to the brightness, and then only jokingly.

5) So that's where those muscles went. Tomorrow's gonna be an Ibuprofen day.

I save all post production for later so I leave all computer gear at home. I'm there to shoot that night. I ghave found the camera mic on ch1 and a wireless lav on the preacher dude on ch 2 covers me in all ways. I usually get the vows from the bride and groom from his mic. I have my camera mic as back up.
I do not diostract the ceremony with a light and I prefer not to blind people with one in the reception either. Today's cameras eat natural light more than well enough for me (and the mother of the bride).

Bump

Bump

bumpity bump.

Anyone have some equipment thoughts on the above?

Grinner,

I wanted to leave the laptop at home, but at the moment it's the only way I have of dumping contents of a card. Now I just have to figure out how to use the files I copied over. Haven't done that before.
