So neccessary

I'm working on a very tight budget (none) and I'm wondering if a shotgun mic is completely necessary for the DVX. On the feature, 99% of the scenes are indoors and fairly intimate, and I have heard rumors around that a supplemental shotgun for the dvx doesn't add much.

Thoughts?

i stock Mic is crap on the dvx if you are looking for good audio you need a mixer and mic setup. i use the sure m367 mixer and the rode ntg2 it works well.

I agree. Forget that the camera even has a mic. Get a shotgun mic, make a fishpole. It will make a world of difference.

you don't need shotgun but hypercardioid pattern mike on boom
Oktava is cheap and sounds dissent ,
so you about 350$ on the minimum setup for mike boom and suspension or less with painters pol:-)

Exile is dead on. For what you are looking for 99% of the shots being indoors you actually don't want a shotgun at all. Look to the Oktava (www.sound-room.com) as being your cheapest solution. In total, I think you could get away for less money that the $350. Here is what I would say:
Oktava w/ Hyper Cap: $179
Soundroom Shockmount: $49
Soundroom Windscreen: $49
Painters Pole from Home Depot: $25

Dude, get that, and you'll be golden like a shower!

This is true, but if you are going to get one mic right now, and only one mic, then a short shotgun is the way to go. That way you can do both interior and exterior stuff.

let's say for a second that i could whack my buddy and use his supercardoid mic. Is it worth it if it isn't an XLR input and only seems to record to the left channel?

Dave,

What mike would you suggest then as being the compromise indoor/outdoor?

As you know most of the suggestions have been the Oktava (indoor)+ AT 4073a (outdoor) or the AKG Blueline 300 power supply with the 93 (indoor) and 98 (outdoor) caps.

Would love to hear your valuable advice.

You can try the AT897 or AT835b for both situations. Shotguns and Hypers have different pick up patterns. Therefore no one mic will work in every situation. Those might be your best bet though.
