So Macs -- noncompatible with P2 Cards

So Macs, at the present moment, are not compatible with the forthcoming P2 cards? Does this apply to desktops as well or just to the laptops? I always use FCP and wouldn't even know what other editing suite would be compatible with the P2 cards. Does anybody have any recommendations? I wonder how long it will take Apple to produce a computer that can handle this new technology.

All the new powerbooks (15",17") have PCMCIA slots, and you can plug a p2 card right into that.

when the high end intel chips are up and running on Mac laptops and programs like DV rack & ultra 2 are available on that platform, I'll buy one!

SkiUtah, the cards do plug in but as of about a month ago, the OS couldn't see the card on my 17" powerbook. We were running FCP4.5 so I've not been able to see if a driver in fcp5 fixes the problem.

I had no problem viewing P2 on the desktop or importing into FCP 5 on Powerbooks and G5s during NAB. Non-issue...

To see or not-to-see is not a question of app version (e.g. fcp 4.5 or fcp 5) but instead of OS version, as it is up to the OS by definition to provide the necessary services so that an external device hooked up to a computer mounts on its desktop (speaking of a Mac, that is). Having dissected the fcp5 installer, I did not find any driver that would be able to add the service of mounting P2 on the Mac desktop.
NoahK and filmstox, please post the OS version you were using when you tried to use P2 cards on your respective Powerbooks and G5s. Thanx

10.4.0. P2 support is indeed built directly into FCP 5. When you upgrade you get P2 as an option in the FCP File>Import menu. Trust me- it works just fine. Mac support is a cornerstone of the P2 gameplan. Again, verbatim from Apple's FCP 5 website:

"go tapeless with built-in Panasonic P2 media support. View and browse P2 devices, then transfer the files you need directly into the Final Cut Pro 5 Browser."
