So I came across a story online...

I came across a story online that happened to be an incredible read. I was thinking that it would make a killer movie (I'd try to do it myself if i had the resources and money to, but sadly i don't). My question is would it be alright to try and script it/produce the film? The story was written/posted anonymously and it is probably impossible to track down the author to get his permission.

Just because the writer of the original story is anonymous or unknown, that doesn't affect their rights to it. By all means try turning the story into a script for fun or as writing practice, but actually making it into a film would be massively risky from a legal viewpoint.

A much better idea would be to write an original script exploring the same general subject matter.
