of course I'm not gonna point it directly at the sun but right now I'm very afraid to even film outside when the suns out... how worried should I be about this? is it ok to just pan by a tree with a bright sun in the background...

As far as I know, filming in bright conditions won't damage the camera, it'll just blow your picture out unless you flip on the ND's and expose properly. As for aiming the camera at the sun, you have to leave it pointing at the sun for considerable time to damage the CCD's. Like, doing some interval recording and accidentally leaving your camera in the path of the sun for a few hours. Or something.

"Revved up like a deuce..." Now, I can't be the only one who thought he sang, "Wrapped up like a douche... ". :[/quote]
The Boss said "revved up like a deuce." But I'm not convinced at all that Manfred Mann did!
