Hey, I tried to catch some snow flakes in a extreme CU, but could not seem to do so. Any suggestions on settings, shutter etc? I have a D40, the lens that came with the kit, a Nikkor 50mm and a Nikkor 55-200mm lens. Thanks.

As a key, whenever you are trying to stop something in mid-motion...be it snow, water, people...whatever...you want to get as much light into the camera as possible so you can crank your shutter up. When using ambient light, the faster the shutter the shorter the period of time your sensor is exposed. Thus "freezing" motion.

Conversely, if you want to show motion, slow down the shutter and adjust the iris to control the light. Play with it and you'll quickly see what I mean. Your camera will also have priority modes to make this easier in that the camera will still meter for you.

You are probably going to want a macro lens if you want just one sizable snow flake. A 100mm macro will probably work best since you will have to have the snow flake really close to the lens for a wide macro.
