Sniper scope effect?

Glad to see there is a tutorial. When I read this post, I set out to create this myself. I actually finished the basic effect in about 20 minutes, but then I ended up spending another hour on the whole clip including sound.

I started in Photoshop and made the scope.

I have uploaded the scope for you here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WPY1YI9R

It is a PSD file, in full 1080 HD, but you can scale it to whatever you want in AE.

I then made that my top layer over all my CC and whatnot.

Just above my source video layer, I made an adjustment layer with LENS BLUR at 30 applied. I then made a circular mask taking up about 2/3 of the exposed scope view. This made the target in focus and the outer edges of the scope out of focus.

ere is a screenshot of the focus mask. (Only source, blur and scope layers visible.)

THAT IS IT.

I also CC'd and scaled and positioned the source video to make it look like the sniper was zooming in and following the target. There are also about 3 frames of a head shot, but it goes quick as I didnt want to make this about doing a head shot. It is all very basic, though, and the whole effect only took 20 minutes and that included creating the scope is PS.

Here is the clip.

Hope that helps.

(The clip is uploaded, but as of now, there is 15 minutes until it is converted. If it isnt available yet, try back in 15 minutes.)

This probably doesn't help in your current situation, but on the DV Rebels guide DVD there's a sweet pre-made project which gives you a super-realistic scope effect that includes chromic abberation and distortion - cool (and as a side benefit, the book's excellent too!)

I second this. The extras included in the book are worth far more than the price of the book. If I were to do this for my own project, I would use the DVRG files. Even if you dont get the book for the sniper scope, I highly suggest the book for every other part of shooting, especially post work.

Also, if you look in my screencap above you can see my RebelTools over on the left.

The quality of the posts and the helpfulness of the people on this forum never ceases to amaze me.

Gage, that's great work and i genuinely appreciate the help. :dankk2:

I've also ordered the Rebel DV book.

Thanks again.

Thanks guys. There's a ton I would change if it were for a project, but I think it works for a quick example.

i'm not a professional sniper,, but in that example video you gave first, he has the scope zooming in on the people.. Can sniper scopes zoom in like that?
