Snatch Effect

Hey guys,

I'm interested in achieving an effect that was used in Guy Ritchie's "Snatch".

One of the characters makes reference to the fact that the word "Replica" is stamped on the side of two would-be assailants guns. At this, the camera POV moves around to the left exposing the side of the guns. We then see three sequential frames of extreme close-ups of the letters "RE", "PL", "ICA" with accompanying metal on metal stamping sounds.

My question is, is this something I do with my still camera and PS (inserting the individual frames in the film in editing) or do I do an extreme CU with my video cam?

Thanks.

Personally, I'd take them with a still camera at max resolution and then cut in the photos, one after another.

Before you do an ECU you might want to check the macro capabilities on whatever video camerea you have...that close you tend to run into focus issues, I'm told. A still camera might be better.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.
I tried an experiment utilizing my still camera with macro enabled. I imported the photos and set the duration for 1sec. I grabbed a wav file online of a gunshot (in lieu of the metal on metal stamping sound) and added it to the montage. The sound effect is cheesy but I was pleased with the result.
The whole process took me just a matter of minutes.

I've decided this will be the method I use for the sequence in my film.

Yes Snatch, actually my fav. scene every! Your best bet is a still camera & macro, and possibly a skater dolly or some sort of a dolly and track. Lay it on a table, frame the gun top to bottom.
