Snap zoom effect?

Just wondered if anyone knows how to produce what I'd call a "snap zoom" effect in FCP....basically where the viewer is watching a wide angle shot and it snaps to a close up of the person talking...probably more of a really fast crop than a zoom. I'm not real familiar with the program yet, but I'm assuming you can create it with Motion. Some good instructions would be a big help. Thanks guys!

You mean like in CSI? Well the real trick is actually shooting the wide shot and then the close up. Then it's a simple matter of enlarging the close up angle over the wide shot to make a smooth transition between the two. Probably much easier to do in Motion but again, requires footage be shot a certain way.

A really cool effect, but more expensive obviously, would be to shoot with two cameras using a beam splitter commonly used for 3D and use different focal lenghts on each camera. It would give you different perspective and a perfect cut. Just mentioning it in case you think that it might be what you saw somewhere else and were trying to emulate it.

One way to go, but totally not necessary to do it like that- definitely not how it's done on CSI. It's easy to repeat an action for a close up and a wide and the zoom is usually so fast it disguises any slight differences in continuity. Also if you look closely at the CSI versions you'll see it's not just a change in focal length but often a change in perspective as well- i.e. moving the camera. Two cameras on a 3D rig won't give you that effect.

So what you're saying is there's no way to do it in post with FCP...I have to shoot both wide and close-up with the camera first? I can see how that would work, but all of these shots I'm seeing on TV, it just seems really unlikely that it's all camera work on the front end. Isn't there a way to just crop the frame to the close up in FCP?

Sure you can zoom into a frame using the Motion tab in FCP but the zoomed in footage is going to be very low quality because you're blowing up pixels.
