Smoothcam massively overcompensating frame movement

Have some footage, shot on a 7D, where some people walk between the character and the camera (character in focus, people walking in foreground). This caused the floor, and thus the camera, to shake. Using Final Cut Pro 6, applied smoothcam. Most of the automatic frame movement looks like a normal smoothcam clip, but at one point, as a particular person moves past the camera, it suddenly moves the frame WAY out the the left. Consequently, I'd have to zoom in so far that it'd destroy the shot. The filter is not reacting to a particularly bad bump - the amount of frame movement seems to have nothing to do with that. For some reason the analysis is really off.

Is there anything I can do? Because I really need to smoothcam this shot.

I hate to sound so green, but how would one do such a thing? I'm not really a post guy -- my editor is out of town, and we're on a deadline, so I have to get it done.

Um yeah- Motion has better controls. Also remember smoothcam takes the entire clip into mind. So if there's wildly different motion in the clip slice it into sections and fix them individually. You have to export each portion as a discrete clip and reimport and place in your timeline in order to make this work. And if it doesn't- what can I say Smoothcam didn't even exist a few years ago...

Smoothcam in Shake was much better, if you had the time. You could keyframe as much as you needed to adjust the zoom and alignment of the frame allowing for really smooth shots. That being said it took a lot of time to do and Shake isn't really the easiest program to use (or the cheapest)

I haven't yet used smoothcam in Motion, but I'm sure it's more adjustable than the very simple version in FCP (or iMovie, for that matter)
