Smooth audio cuts

This may not really be answerable, but I'm hoping to pick up a few pro tips.

I have continued to have issues making cuts in audio (mostly during speaking audio, such as interviews) where there is an unwanted sound/word occurring one or two frames away from the end of what I want. I am familiar with using keyframes to smooth out the transition, but I still find myself spending what seems like too much time trying to get the cuts to sound natural and not draw attention to the fact that the audio was cut suddenly.

Any advice?

So when you do your keyframing to fade out the unwanted vocal sounds your problem becomes the unnatural silence in between the voices? One or two frames is really really tight. First I'd try cutting audio only to a short stretch of room ambience from your recordings when no one is talking (even better, maybe you always record some after an interview).

The speediest fix when enough clean frames are there to make it possible, is a short audio crossfade transition, sliding it left or right to the clip that has the longest pause between words. If that doesn't work and if you haven't tried it yet, use two or three audio tracks. If your interviews are on Track 1, on Track 2 during the transitions add a second or two of room ambience. Fade it up to a low level and fade it out, mirroring the fades and ambient levels of the voice tracks. Once you have one that works, you can quickly copy and paste it under each scene change on the timeline.
