Smoking engine effect

Hi!

We are shooting a short film, and in once scene a truck will look like it crashed into a ditch. we would like to the the engine smoking, like the raditator has cracked, but how? we thought about putting something in a can and lighting it on fire, then hiding the can in the engine somewhere out of sight, but that seems a little dangerous...
does anyone have some suggestions that we could try?

Thanks!

Perhaps a smoke machine? You can pick 'em up for a little under 20 bucks at a Party City or Target or Wal-Mart or whatever.

Something with dry ice and hot water may work. A hose routed up from under the car and attached to a 2-liter soda bottle. Just be careful not to seal the system up or you will see some kind of explosion.

Light 4-5 different types of fires, also use steam. Film the smoke in front of a matte black background. Pick the best, resize and rotate and composite with your engine.
