Pain in the ass
I searched for this but did not find anything that is exactly what I'm looking for.

I have a scene in which I need a little puff, or stream of smoke to rise up in front of the camera on cue. So it goes: Action->puff. Action->puff.

What's safe to use and can just be purchased? I have no time right now to make something. I am heading to Abracadabra tomorrow, but thought I would ask here as well.

I guess I could add it in post if need be, but I just think it would be better on set.

Get a Quaker Oats container, dump the oats, cut a hole* in the lid.

Drop a smoky thing into the container (wrapped in aluminum foil or something so it doesn't burn thru the container).

Wait a bit, so it fills will smoke. Tap the bottom.

Puff.


*A round hole will give you smoke rings. You may not want that. Then again, from the side, the ringiness may not be noticeable.
 
You can also take a oat container and cut off both ends and stretch a cut balloon over the bottom, fill it with smoke and pull and release the balloon and you will have more control on the smoke speed.
