smoke machine

Yes, you can get it at places like Filmtools. However, I don't know if they can ship it, I think there may be some federal regulations against that. B&H probably carries it though.

Bah! I just set up a propane tank with one of those huge heads they use to melt blacktop point the monster flame against the back of a 8' x 8' sheet of 1/4" steel and have lackies throw a few pints of diesel fuel on the front of it every few seconds. You gots smoke galore!

It should seem beyond obvious that I am joking.

I bought a smoke machine with a gallon of juice on eBay for about $40 delivered, fwiw...

Opressor, you can get cheap smoke machines at DJ stores - under $60 bucks. Try to get a water based juice for it. I did see the smoke in the can at Film Tools but was wondering how long can that last, unless its dry ice.

I used a cheap smoke machine, and the results were horrible.

The smoke was thin and stringy, dissipated quickly, and worse -- smelled terrible. You couldn't be in the room for more than a few minutes. Everything ended up smelling afterwards. Ick.

I still like the smoke-machine idea, but better to invest in a good one and good fluid. A good DJ or lighting shop will let you test them (they usually have a special room for testing lights under "club" conditions.)
