"Smeared Look"?

I live in Las Vegas, NV. I'm going to be shooting some Neon soon and along with
the pristine footage, I'd like to try my hand at getting that "smeared look" I've
seen.

Without having to venture forth with the hack frame rate that I've read about,
is there any way to do this just with my camera? Specific settings, frame rates,
shutter speeds etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best.

I am assuming you mean those long exposure light streaks.

This is much better attained on a DSLR using the photography functions, but if you want to do it on video this is your best bet.

Use the lowest shutter you can set on your camera. This will heighten the motion blur. You don't necessarily need to use a faster fps, but sometimes the camera will allow longer shutter speeds if you use less fps.

For example if shooting 24 fps... you can't possibly have a shutter speed lower than 1/24th of a second... because you are already exposing for every possible moment. However if your camera allows, you can either blend exposures to increase the effect or reduce fps and take longer exposures.

Past those options, the only thing you can do to get more 'streaking' is to shoot objects moving at greater speeds. The faster the object travels, the more distance it will cover within that 1/xxth of a second.

Referring to the frame rate hack, I assume you are using an HVX. To my knowledge you can shoot 24fps at 1/12th of a second.... right? I think you set the camera to 'video' mode in the scene file and then use the shutter buttons to go to 1/12th. This must be some type of frame blending, because it's impossible to shoot 1/12th of a shutter on 24 unique fps...

Ryan,

First off, sorry about the "smeared" title but I wasn't sure what is was technically called. Now I know (long exposed light streaks).

Thanks for taking time to reply and explain how to achieve this. I'll try it out and
see how it goes. My camera is an HPX-170.

Regards.

Put it in 720p mode, film cam mode. Use the frame rate hack, go to 2 fps. Then set the syncro scan shutter to 350 or 360 degrees. Then change the shutter speed to match the syncro scan shutter (you'll know when you've got it right, it'll be incredibly hyper bright and super-smeary).

Thanks Barry. I'll do a search on how to put my cam in the 'frame rate hack'
mode.

Hahaha, no worries. I'm not sure I called it by the most proper name. :P

Listen to Barry, because using the framerate hack will def. give you more smear...
