SmallHD 702 Bright - RGB Glitch Lines

Hoping to get some clarity on an issue I'm having with my new SmallHD 702 Bright monitor...I'm now on my third version of this thing, and I'm running out of patience.

All 3 units I've had have exhibited the same issue - Little RGB glitch type lines that come and go throughout the screen during use. They come in bursts...It'll work fine for a few minutes, then I'll see a bunch of these little lines pop up for a frame or two each and disappear, then fine for another few minutes. I bought the monitor on B&H on a Cyber Monday deal earlier this month, returned it, got another, same issue, returned for another unit again, and now looking at the same problem for the 3rd time. I also have a friend who bought one and he is seeing the same little lines. I've tried all of my monitors on two different cameras, both SDI and HDMI, I've tried various frame rates, PSF, 60p, etc, different power sources...all 3 units had the lines under all circumstances.

I tried to capture the issue on video using my phone, but it ended up being too shaky and hard to see, so for now here's a still image showing the lines I'm describing.

Has anyone else seen this? I spoke to SmallHD, and to their credit, they've offered a repair. But they aren't acknowledging that this is a trend with this model, which is shocking since I've now confirmed 4 instances of it. Is anyone else seeing it and just ignoring it? Other people have to have been ordering on B&H's 50% off deal (The initial deal was just for Cyber Monday, but they're offering it again right now) and I can't be so unlucky to have randomly gotten 3 bad units. It doesn't make the monitor unusable, but since there seem to be a lot of units out there without this problem, I'd like one with a clean image.

Hey Jaypass,

Just unboxed my 702 bright today (also purchased on the same deal). I first received an open box unit from BH last month, so returned it and got this new one after a month long back-order.

I am having the EXACT issues you are having. I have used 702s in the past without this issue so it's frustrating that it's happening on so many new units!

What did you end up doing? Keep returning until you got a unit that didn't do that? Or did you hear anything else from SmallHD?

I would hate to spend the next few months returning and testing multiple different monitors until I got a good one, but I also don't want a monitor with this issue.

Any chance it's a firmware issue or something?

I went through 3 units, all of them had the issue. I finally gave up and returned the last one for a refund, but after I did SmallHD got back to my ticket and acknowledged that this was a trend...They did say it’s a firmware issue and they’re expecting a fix in the near future.

Unfortunately by then I had already picked up a Shogun Inferno for use as a monitor and I’m happy with that so far(although the internal fan is annoying).

I’m glad I have further confirmation of the issue from another user, I felt like I was taking crazy pills for a while there haha. Still surprised how few people have been talking about it though...and how long it took for enough people to complain to SmallHD for them to figure out they did in fact have a firmware problem.

Oh, that's great to hear that it will be fixed with firmware! Yeah, I was really surprised. This was the only thread I have found talking about the issue at all!

Was considering the Inferno too, but heard the same thing about the fan. Although, having an external recorder would be nice for backup.

Thanks for getting back to this as fast as you did! Saves me a ton of time not having to exchange a bunch of monitors!

I was in the same boat with SmallHD and B&H. Both monitors received and returned to B&H were open boxes AND both of them had a bad sony batt plate. I too bought a Atomos product and i feel that I got so much for my money. I do miss SmallHD's page os and build, but for the amount of money they charge, I expect good quality.
By the way, I had that glitch also whenever I switched pages, but it didn't bug me too much.
