Smallest moving GG solution yet???

The flip module will be available seperately. Right now, it's looking like $400 for the adapter, likely $250 for the flip module. The flip module will be usable with any other adapter too. Price may come down if there's enough interest as I'll be able to volume order some of the components. CNC machine costs for some of the parts may come down too.

Do the latest pictures of your adapter include this flip module that you mentioned, or will we see that later?

Great work so far.

Emmanuel, I had a great detailed reply for you, hit post and she was gone :crybaby:

So a briefer reply:

1. I'm seeing a real average of 1 f/stop loss (50mm F/1.4). This isn't a guess, it's based on real observations on the cam. Anyone who has an adapter currently knows that except MPIC, they all show from 2 to 3 f/stops light loss in the field. That's why I abandoned the spinner. Engineered diffuser surfaces in those sizes (min 85-90mm disc) are simply too expensive.

2. HD will not be an issue. As long as the cam can focus a 24x36 frame from two inches away, it will be fine. The GS400 will zoom into a full 16:9 frame, and still maintain focus. Marking out a 24x36mm frame on a piece of paper and doing the frame focus test at 2 inches will tell you right away.

3. The parts are effectively being globally sourced. Providing that everyone holds their end, nothing's lost in shipping etc, 30 days is an optimistic target.

4. I don't have a larger chip cam at my disposal...so I wouldn't even offer up conjecture. There are issues there that I'm no doubt unaware of.

5. Attachment is using 72mm .75 pitch threads...the filter ring standard. The final version will have a set screw/slip ring combo to allow rotating the adapter once it is solidly affixed for frame alignment.
How I'd like read the «great detailed reply» that you are posting that you had for me. :crybaby: I know what you are talking about but please, try it again!

I'd like hear you. I liked so much the footage that I saw. Very pleasant. The question is not only to have DOF or not, sharpness (very important but as first RELEVANT requisite), no-losses, etc. It is also important to get the shallow DOF density as well. It's like to have 64 levels of gray or less than that. If we have only black & white, well, it will be merely black & white... And yours promises. And when you have the focus in the middle of the DOF you know what you are selling...

Jonathan has been to worry me with his 1/3" small camcorders focus, that's why I'm asking you directly to 1/2" or to a 2/3" chips use. And because if he will be out I will be with you or with the best affordable 35mm adapter out there. And I'm interested to sell it here where I'm doing consulting to feature production.

Can you send me as soon as possible the detailed reply that you had to me?

Invito, the flip "module" is coming after the adapter. I've had to priorize my efforts on the adapter. Not to worry though, I will not be creating an integrated solution...so early purchasers will not be missing out. The flip will be a seperate module altogether. My plan was to make it available to current users at a reduced cost. If I was doing this full time, I'd develop them together..but time is the all important issue.

The idea is that you can then make a choice as to whether you wish to use the flip or not. It will add approx. 50mm to the length and offset the optical axis upwards (or downwards) 24mm. It should be usable with any adapter providing 72mm filter threads can be adapted to.

Emmanuel, perhaps you can pmail me with questions that I didn't deal with in my earlier reply? Be as specific as possible with regards to the 1/2" or 2/3" CCD.

Car3o, I'm looking at a DIY option down the road....

Steve, I will probably not include a macro...simply because many cams won't need it. Once the macro specs are determined, it would make sense to do a bulk purchase though and supply them at reduced cost.

There is also the possibility (again depending on volume) of getting good quality coated achromats made for this purpose.

So far you've only been able to make tests with the G400, right? I'm very currious to see how does it work with HD.

It will work. I can post a few 4MB stills from the GS400 with the adapter attached if you'd like. Based on recent posts (and I hate to be cryptic here), but I can guarantee it will work with HD.

Looks very good. If I were in the market, I'd be a convinced customer.

My only advice to you would be that, when offering up clips, please do some rack focusing and some slow pans across alternating bright/dark surfaces. The contrasts and motion show strengths/weaknesses of any adapter... black text on white paper is always a good thing to use (por ejemplo).

I hear ya Jim. The first clip posted back a few days ago has lots of focus racks, but until I do up another rails system, I need to keep hands off the focus ring. Either that, or buy a cam with metal filter threads and a magnesium chassis to support it.

I'll be doing some more shooting with my dolly and crane shortly to add to the footage collection. I hate jittery footage.

Yeah.... join the club. Why not get some gears from me (and some plans for the FF) so you can keep that machinst of yours up and running?
I have the rods support finished. Here:

No need to "get inspired only"! Just ask for it and you have something to take it to the next level (and sell a "brand name" hehehe)?
I also need some parts for the MPIC. Are you up to make them?

Those rods are really slick! We must be on the same wavelength as I just finished a night in the shop working on a very simple, compact and solid rails system for my setup. The new drill press and cross slide vice is making my life oh so much easier.

Something tells me the MPIC parts are out of my league...but I'll pmail you. I've looked at your FF system and from what I've seen, definitely the best setup by far at that price point. I hope someday soon I can justify the purchase.

Krummi, I'm rapidly losing track of folks wanting to "sign up". I'll definitely need to put a site together post haste.

Dennis, as you asked, I sent you a PM.

If we are going to a bigger thread/lens -- like Sony XDCAM-HD 1/2" CCD series or any 2/3" chip cam, so, is there the possibility to losses regarding the grain or not?

And if it's the case, are you open in order to change to a screen instead glass?

Emmanuel, the Brevis35 uses an engineered diffuser..not glass. As such I'm fairly convinced that it will work with a larger chip cam, if the cam can focus on the image. I've taken about a dozen shots through the unit using the GS400 4MB stills function. Although GS400 stills are effectively just over 2MB in real resolution, they still look great (for a GS400 still), and have 0 visible grain. Having said that, I absolutely need to get one of the larger cams tested in order to ascertain any other issues that might arise. One thing's for sure, I will not use glass again...it's way too lossy. Actually, even my spinner used optical acrylic spinning discs. Does the P&S adapter work on the larger cams?

On the postive side, I've finally found a supplier for the large diameter carbon fibre tubing. That's a big load off my back.

I'm also entering negotiations to have the diffuser custom manufactured to my specs....exciting stuff.

I made the rookie mistake of cleaning out a rails hole last night with the material unclamped, and one rail in. The result: One corkscrew rail, some blood, and a reminder that even a quck clean requires securing your work....
