Smallest moving GG solution yet???

I'll get on that tomorrow, Guskers. The adapter we beta-groupers are getting will have a GG distance 50mm (2 in) from the lens?

50mm is within .5mm of the actual distance from your filter threads. If a macro is used, the outer macro thread becomes the 50mm reference.

I'm working with a few optics outfits to get achromats made, but we need to figure out diopter ranges for the pro cams that will need a macro. The glass gets pretty huge in 72mm flavour as you approach 100m focal lengths.

Hey Dennis, I just made your test to see if I'm going to need a macro or a spacer tube with the FX1...and aparently I WON'T. I printed your pfd and put the camera 50mm from it, and then I zoomed in until the border disapeared...I could still maitain focus! And what surprised me the most is that I didn't even have to zoom in that much. With the letus I had to zoom the heck out of it. Things are getting better and better. This was one of the problems that worried me the most. Can't wait for the test drive.

Guskers,

Sorry if you allready addressed this (I might have overlooked it), but does the adapter cause any type of noise? (audio noise when running)

Here was my results with the HDR-HC1 ancase anyone else out there has one.
(I'd recomend they try the printout/test too, just incase I mucked things up)
Filter threads were 50mm away from the pattern.

and another test with a macro lens on:

Without the macro, the outside rings are slightly out of focus when the centre one is dead on, and if I bring the outer rings in focus, the centre one will be slightly off. However maybe the focusing will be more even, when using on a focus screen from the adapter. The Macro lens did improve things slightly, on the paper pattern test anyways.

Rawfa, that's great news. Can you post up a few seconds of the zoom in? You tried both HD and SD right? Also confirm that the scale on the frame printed 1:1...by measuring it.

One of the design goals was to minimize/eliminate the need for additional optics/spacer tubes for as many cams as possible. The DVX100 (non A) has the same close focus issue.

James, minimizing noise and vibration were pretty high on my list as design goals, and reflect a few changes to the design based on my own research into NVH. For many people shooting with adapters (particularly the moving variety) they are surprised that some of them are pretty loud. One of the M2 reports here indicated being able to hear the adapter six feet away. Having a camera with an AGC enabled mic inches behind the adapter is a very difficult issue to address. If gain is cranked, there is no moving adapter out there that will not show up.

With the GS400, set at -6db manual levels with AGC, on a quiet day outside, I could only hear the prototype if I cranked my speaker volume...and that of course is with a mic several inches behind the adapter. The production design will be significantly quieter. I think the expectation is that onboard mics will not be usable with pretty much any of the adapters out there. Due to the variances with all the camera's, sensitivities, mic placements etc. it's really hard to pin this one down...but the Brevis should be amongst the quietest/if not the quietest out there.

During some confidence testing I ran the adapter continuously for 20+ hours. With the adapter sitting about 2 1/2 feet to my right, on the tripod, I had to look at the LED and stick my ear close to see if it was still running. That's with a computer at my feet....so a little background noise from the PC. It could have been quieter yet, but not without making the adapter a fair bit bigger.

F8 to F16 on the Brevis.

F8 to F16 on the Brevis.

I know a few of you are itching for more footage so I pulled this test I did last week. This is with the prototype, not the production version as you will discern by the "catfight" diffusor. The audio is untouched so you can hear my dialogue, and the Brevis noise. Keep in mind that the production version will be about half (probably less) this volume.

Note also, that I did not add any light as I stopped down the F1.4 50mm!!

Those of you who have used other adapters might find this test interesting :)

Here's the clip.

Film77, check out the screen grabs at www.cinevate.com in the demo section. They were taken using the GS400 onboard stills function, at much higher resolution than an HD camera frame (although the GS400 isn't a great stills cam by any stretch). Production versions will be out in about a week, and 11 units are going out to various camera owners The site is set up with an ecommerce solution for purchase.

There will be lots of footage coming in shortly from shooters with no doubt better skills than mine :)

I've got a lot of plans lined up for the Brevis35.

I have a friend who wants me to shoot his short for him. It'll be mostly exteriors at a gas station, at night, using available light. Should be a good test for light loss.

Also looking at working on a herofest film and shooting with the Brevis.

Then this summer I'll be doing a longer short (30-40min) and be using the Brevis, and hopefully some more lens options.

Can't really tell much from the new footage. It's hard to tell on deadwood (when do you think you're going to have the XL2 footage?). in 10 days I'll find out by my self...ops...no, in 10 days it'll be shipped...ops...in 10 days it will not be shipped because I'm a Canon Fd user. So I guess it's about April 12 for me. Don't know how long will it take to reach Barcelona. Even though most my projects will start in May, it would be nice to have the Brevis35 before that to get used to it. I have a truck load of projects just waiting for the Brevis (shorts, music videos, advertising, you name it).

Rawf, the footage was just a test of using very high f/stops + sharpness with the Brevis. In practice, you should never due this for optical reaons ... but with many adapters it is impossible to get anywhere close to F16 without serious grain showing up. F/8 was pushing the envelope with my spinner without adding serious light.

I can get the adapter to you in three days by air...however, the shipping costs will be higher.

XL2 footage should be by the weekend if all goes well.
