Smaller alternative to the Rode Video Mic?

[Derkoi]

Hey,

I recently used my friends rode video mic with my Canon 550D and although i love the quality i would like something slightly smaller for my own use.

Is there anything out there that comes close to the Rode but smaller?

Is this for on-camera use? Guide Track? Primary sound?

Yeah.

I know it's better to use a boom and operator but sometimes there's just me as crew so i have no choice.

there's that sennheiser mke 200 for around $200.

I had that one but the cable on it came off....

There's the Sennheiser MKE-400. It's a little shotgun that's a good bit smaller than the Rode VideoMic. It's a more updated design than the MKE-200.

However, typically people like the sound of the Rode VideoMic better.

In the near future I'm planning a shootout of a bunch of small on-camera microphones with mini-plug outputs (including the VideoMic and the MKE 400). Keep an eye out for it. I'll post a link to it here in a week or two.

Yeah, i might just have to live with the size of the video mic, for the price it's great. Can't have everything when funds are limited.

If you don't mind syncing sound in post and waiting until September, the Zoom H1 may interest you.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

A portable recorder with stereo mics isn't a good replacement for a dedicated shotgun mic.

No such thing - I think you mean the MKE 300.

But the new MKE 400 is better.

Or there's the Ambient TinyMic which is smaller still.

I know Chris Price from Ambient....I think he moved to Portugal....
