Small film competitions as a forum for your bigger projects.

Recently I finished a pilot for a television show, and I was looking for ways to attract different media outlets for screenings. I had never done a project this large, and I found something that I would suggest to other small time, up and coming filmmakers.

My partner and I entered into a series of filmracing contests. You know the ones, they give you 12, 24, 48 hours, whatever, to write, shoot and edit a film, then the winners have a screening that attracts all sorts of local film officials (your local film office often invites the media and local celebrities).

Anyway, my partner and I would make films for these and then use the screenings as a forum to promote ourselves, and our larger projects while we had the ears of all these professionals. It worked out well for us :-)

I was just wondering if others have tried similar stunts and what kind of outcomes they had!
