Small Diaphragm or Hypercardioid, indoors?

Small diaphragm refers to a physical type (pencil mics as commonly refered), where as "Hyper-cardioid" refers to polar pick-up pattern of the microphone, which has very little to do with the physical "look" of the mic.

Small diaphragm condensers are available in several polar patterns including hypercardioid, cardioid, omni, ect..

and hypercardioid mics are available in various mechanincal configurations , such as small diaphragm, handheld, large diaphragm (big studio mic), and so forth.

what is commonly recommended here in Video land for indoors sound is a "Small diaphragm, hypercardioid condenser mic "

hope that helps.
