I just found this at B&H:

Does anyone know if this is a decent shotgun mic? My last mic, which was a cheap Azden ECZ-990 with a fixed cord that died after the boom pole took a fall down the stairs and I've been looking for an inexpensive XLR mic ever since.

Actually, that brings me to my next question. I have a 1/8" to XLR converter and I've been looking at the Azden SGM-X, but I wanted to know just how much quality loss there is with the converter. Since I don't have a working mic with me right now, I can't tell. But when I plugged a cheap Nady mic I use to record speakerphone interviews and some music demos, I did notice some hiss.

Or maybe I should just suck it up and get the Azden SGM-1X, which has an XLR connection. I really didn't mind the ECZ-990, except for it's poor shock mounting, so I'm sure the SGM-1X would be fine. But if I can save around $70 on my next film's budget with the SM Pro Audio mic and get just about the same quality, it'd be nice.

In Europe that same mic's name is t.bone. It's Australian origin, and sold diffirent names around the world. It's not so sensitive like Sennheiser K6/ME66, but if you placed it near, you can get nice neutral audio with it. So, if you get audio under 5 meter(don't know that distance in feets), EM9600 works pretty well. Longer distance (in my opinions) it make too much echo. With phantom-use, results are little better than with battery. That mic is better than DVX's internal mics, but lightyear behind Sennheiser.
(English is not my language... hope you understand)
