slow renders...

Since installing 5.0 on my G5, I have noticed my red render bars take longer than normal to render out a clip with minimal or no effects. I had a photo that I imported onto my time and it took up to 4 minutes to render out! It used to take under 5 seconds! I have to figure out why my G5 is running slow it seems. I have 3.5 gigs of Ram in there. 250 gig system drive and 120gig 2nd internal drive...down to about 85 gigs now since I am in the middle of editing a documentary. I read in the book that I could eliminate Render Files to free up disc space. Maybe I will try that. Anything in the settings I should look at? Now the other color render bars take no time to render out. Just having a problem with the RED bars.

First you should upgrade to at least 5.04 (through software update) 5.0 was pretty buggy.
Remember to trash prefs
There was also quite a few plugins that needed updating to work with 5, if you're using 3rd party stuff.

Secondly - re-render your stuff is often a good point, BUT do a test first on a single clip.

You can set your RT capasaties to "dynamical" for preview. This is a quite flexible way to get as much as the system can handle.

To me 5.1.2 is much snappier than 4... On a dual G5.

Okay I have upgraded to all the latest upgrades and my rendering is still slow in my opinion. Its not as quick as I am used to. 2 of my 1gig ram sticks were defective and have been replaced. Is there something in the settings that I need to have selected that I may have overlooked to speed up the rendering? I thought it was just the Red render bars but its the Orange bars that are slow as well. It seems like its rendering a frame at a time! Never was that slow! I have my timeline set to UNLIMITED RT.

If you're on 5.2.1, you could sett your render settings quite low, to speed up proxy-renders. Also setting the RT to dynamical is pretty nice.

Remember to set the render settings to "High precision YUV" for final renders.

On some uprades FCP has had a distinct dislike of older renderfiles. Have you checked this?

should i trash those render files? I am using FCP version 5.1.2.

Should I set the frame rate as Dynamic as well? I already have the video quality at Dynamic.
