slow motion

so the hvx200 has variable rate. can the dvx do that too? can it do slow motion in the middle of a shot? how smooth does the slow motion look?

dvx doesnt do slow motion, but you can shoot 30p or 60i and slow it down in post and it looks pretty good (if done correctly). as for the middle of a shot, i would assume the hvx can't do that, seems like a feature that only the varicam would do. hvx is awesome, but not that awesome, heh...

You can shoot 30p on the DVX and show it down to 24p, this is perfectly smooth, just like shooting 60p on the HVX and slowing it down. You can also use the method mentioned above. The speed is more noticable, but you lose resoultion on the de-interlace. The DVX can't change frame rates while recording, and I don't believe the HVX can either.

The term "ramping" comes to mind here, and the HVX cannot ramp to different frame rates while recording.
