Slow Motion - Very Cool

I was getting ready to do my first slow motion shot.

I did a bunch of research and read everything in the forums on the subject. I was getting ready to either buy Twixtor or shoot at 60i and then bring it into 24p.

I realized I had never actually tried using Final Cut Pro's built-in Time Remap function. So I have been playing with it all night.

I think it looks phenomenal. It is better than I ever imagined. I have tried it at all different speeds from 10%, 50%, even sped up to 300% and I think the Frame Blending looks fantastic.

Am I missing something or are my standards just really low?

see what you think when you play your slow mo on a tv - that's the real test. I was pleased too until I got it on a tv, then it strobed like a nightclub- gack!

ok, im a loner donnie, a rebel is also from Pee Wee's Big Adventure. It's also a song by the getupkids

Re: Slow Motion - Very Cool

Michael, thanks for explaining. I am only familiar with the movie and not the band.

Meanwhile, I will have to check out the slowmo on a tv because there is no strobe on my monitor.

so what was the result on the ntsc TV? does the footage look ok?

Re: Slow Motion - Very Cool

The Time Remap technique is VERY popular in Films and TV shows and commercials these days. I use it for a variety of projects I work on.

I have been hearing a lot of talk about people not knowing how to slow video down. Time Remap is one way or you can just change the speed of the clip is another way. I don't have any problems slowing 24P video down. I don't need to shoot 30p to slow something down either.

Re: Slow Motion - Very Cool

How slow do you guys go? I time remapped some clips in FCP and I find that anything slower than 50% shows some color flicker.

Re: Slow Motion - Very Cool

Hmm, seems I might have to take back what I said earlier - could one of you please explain the time remap function, step by step? I've simply been changing the speed of the clip - what is the difference?

I'd certainly like to improve my slow-mo. It's pretty heinous at the moment.

Re: Slow Motion - Very Cool

I think we're talking about the same thing. The time remap function is under the motion tab of the clip and in it there's a field for changing the speed of the clip.

Right -- time remap allows you to perform arbitrary manipulation of the clip's timeline, whereas right-clicking and changing the duration results in a simple slowdown or speedup.

You can get passably decent "overcranked" results (i.e. kinda like film) if you use higher shutter speeds and either judicious use of clip speed or specialized tools like RE:Timer/Twixtor.

Re: Slow Motion - Very Cool

Use the Flicker Free filter on the slow mo's that stutter. You'll find it helps a lot.

A much easier way to do time remaping is to do it all in the time line directly with the Time Remap Tool. If you're unfamiliar with the tool, whip out the manual and look it up. GeniusDV also has a FCP-HD training DVD that contains an excelent tutorial on using the Time Remap Tool directly in the Time Line. It is MUCH easier, faster and more acturate than using the Motion tab settings. Ugh, I'll never touch Time Remap in the Motion tab ever again!

It is hidden under the Slip tool in the tool palette. Once you whip that puppy out, go to the lower left of your Time Line and turn on the Clip Keyframe function (should be the second button from the left, down there). It will show on a normal clip, evenly spaced tick marks under each track. Evenly spaced means 100% speed. You can click on a clip and move your mouse left and right to adjust the speed. The clip speed marks under the track will change to show the speed changes you made. And it will NOT alter the "length" of the clip. Which is what Time Remapping is all about. It will add keyframe markers.

Look it up, get a tutorial, learn the details. It is SO worth it. That control in the Motion tab simply just sucks when you learn to use the Time Remap Tool.
