Slow motion shutter settings

sorry guys another noob question here. I want to get a slow motion effect using the GH1.. I heard that some people have used the Shutter settings to do this. Is this really true for the GH1? If i turn to the S dial on the GH1 what shutter speeds will give me slow motion effect? Also is it better to use Shutter priority on Film Mode or turning the dial to Shutter? Thanks :beer:

It is at a high rate of frames per second (210FPS here). If you are thinking of a blurry, ghosting effect, like people moving ethereally through a dimly lighter area at night, you need a slow shutter speed - like perhaps 1/2 second.

I am also new to this fascinating video world - my understanding is people are using 720/125th second when they intend the shot to end up as a slow motion scene.
 
With the GH1, set it to 720/60p mode (SH) and set your shutter to 1/120.

Then, in your NLE, conform the footage to 24p by playing it at 40% speed. That'll give you frame-accurate excellent slow motion.

I'm sorry Barry can you explain what NLE means? and conforming using what program? I bought VoltaicHD do you mean with that? can you teach me how to play it at 40% speed? realy sorry to be a bother :(... also there's no way to do this with 1080? Thank you :(
 
NLE = Non Linear Editor. Programs like Premiere, Vegas, Final Cut, iMovie, ie; the application you edit your film in. Read the manual for the one you got, they all have different ways to set the playback speed of the clip. Voltaic is a transcoder application, it's what you use to make files that work better in editing than the AVCHD files the GH1 records to. The 1080 mode shoots 24 fps on NTSC model and 25 on PAL, this is a processor and data rate limitation.

Do the NTSC cam really have 1/120, isn't 1/125? I've seen conflicting info on this.

(And again, for PAL users the best slo-mo shutter is 1/100)
 
Hi Martti,

My NTSC GH1 has 1/50, 160, and then 1/125 - but no 1/120.

In a different vein, would you mind shedding some light on the best way (highest quality) to output a file for a DVD? Should I make a QT 422 file and use it to make the DVD?

Umm... I only output to DVD for content approval, not quality checking. Since mpeg2 is a 8 bit format I render to PhotoJPEG at 75% quality which is 4:2:2 with embedded uncompressed audio at 44.1 kHz and then let iDVD convert it at highest settings. Can't muster myself to use DVD Studio Pro for this and none of my clients has complained over my DVDs so far. If you really want to be sure of top quality I guess you can use the Animation codec at best quality but doubt you'll see much difference, the file sizes go up rather substantially though. If you are making a master for DVD reproduction I suggest talk with the facility, they all have their own preferences.
