Slow Motion of 30P footage.....

I have some footage that was shot in 30P on a DVX and there are a few shots I would like to slow mo. If I just change the speed on the FCP timeline, it interlaces the footage in an extremely horrible fashion, making it useless. I then decided to attempt the same slow mo rate (50% just for exprimental purposes) in After Effects which did a WAY better job of it. AE seemed to repeat frames instead of attempting to draw info from different frames and interlacing them together the way that FCP did. Even at 50% the AE slow mo looked pretty good.

However, when I rendered the footage from AE and imported it in to FCP, there is an OBVIOUS degradation in the image quality compared to the untouched clip in FCP.

Is this due to the slowing, the AE render settings (Animation / no fields / 30 fps), or the re-render on the FCP time line?

Any formulas to try instead of these? Am I missing something.

Haven't used Twixtor in over 2 years but it was pretty good as I remember, just an annoyingly dry read me to figure out how to use it properly. ReTimer is supposed to be amazing. Friend hipped me to that about 2 years ago too. He uses Vegas, me FCP.

the problem is your export settings. dont export as an animation. export it uncompressed, assuming all you did was what you said and no color or brightness adjustments you will see a tremendous increase in quality. good luck!

Animation exported at highest settings = lossless = uncompressed
Bottom line is aniamtion at full quality is fine for all work.

Make sure to turn on frame/field blending and enable tiem remapping in AE.

Note that FCP will connvert to DV (if that's what your sequence is set for) when you render in the timeline.

Make sure your fps you export from AE matches FCP sequence settings exactly. If one's 29.97 and the other 30 you could see some speed adjustment.

I am going to have to agree with TimeKoder13 twixtor is the best thing out there for post slow downs. That I have found any way. It is very hard to use though. There is no mastering that plug-in. Everytime there is a change in motion from out side the frame to inside you have to recalibrate. They also have a new version for FCP.

Speaking of post slow downs, has anyone heard anything more about after effects 7. I read somewhere online that it was suppose to have a new post slow down effect built in. Anyone know?

Hope that I could help.

Hasn't 6.5 only been out for a short time? When did you hear they were planning to release 7? Damn.

Here's another option. In After Effects, import two versions of the same clip. Interpret one as lower field first, edge detect, one as upper field first, edge detect. put them both into a comp, with the upper field first on top of the lower and its opacity set to 50. nest that comp into a new one, turn on frame blending, and apply your time stretch. that should help clean up some things as well as giving AE a little more to work with as far as frames go. if you are going to render from Final Cut, do so uncompressed but with fields. Render from AE uncompressed and put back into your project.
