slow motion lipsync

i know there is a mathematical formula for capturing slow motion lipsyncing...if i sped up my audio by 60% then the formula is 100%/160%, or 62.5%. so i would need to slow down my video 62.5 % to match normal playback of audio. now if i shot the scene in 60FPS 720 24PN...how many percent is it being slowed down when playback in 24 frames? we are shooting about 36 more frames, right? to make 60. im racking my brain to figure out the formula so i can get a percentage. sorry, hated math in HS.

and if someone has done this already or would like try to do it, please post some footage of it. it would be cool to see. a popular artist that overuses this effect is mariah carey.

here is what i got from Barry a few months ago on the same issue (i haven't needed to use it yet though, so please let me know if it helps!)

One minute of footage at 30P would take 1:15 to play back at 24P.

So you would want to shoot 20% less time, so it takes 25% longer to play back.

So retime your audio to play back in 80% of its time, and it should all line up. If you have a 1:00 song, you want to speed it up so that it takes 48 seconds to play. Then you shoot 48 seconds worth of 30P footage. When you import that 48 seconds and tell it to play back at 80% speed, it'll play back in 60 seconds -- which is the speed of the original song.

Same for 60i, but twice as much -- so for a 1 minute song, you'd need to speed it up to where it plays in 36 seconds. Then shoot 60i sync'ed to that 36-second song. Put the footage on the timeline and tell it to play back at 40% speed, and it should now take 1 minute to play back, sync'd to the original 1-minute song.

I've never done this with video, though I intend to with the HVX200 in near future

I have done this often with film. There's always a playback guy that doubles the speed on the song and we shoot 48 frames per second. The talent has to have that fast track ahead of time and practice playing at doubel speed - it can be very tough if not impossible in some cases, such as with fast lyrics or fast guitar licks.

With the HVX I plan to shoot 48 for the slow mo just like with film.

have you tried the slow motion trick? seems fairly simple with the HVX. double the speed of playback (50% faster), film at 48 fps. but what if u filmed at 60 fps? [i think the formula is playback at (67% faster) and film at 60fps]. i could be wrong. but if playback is 50% faster u are going at 150% normal speed.

100/150=66.6/67 | 150%*67%=100.5% (24fps)
100/167=60 | 167%*60%=100.2% (60fps)

could i be wrong? heh. first time i am working with frame rates at all. and u can play with interval too...hmm. what cha think?

Are you using an external audio deck or DAT? I'm probably wrong here, but does the camera record audio in the 24pN mode., or rather the 60FPS 24PN mode ??

well u cant record audio once u use the VFR feature on the HVX. u would have to put a marker and try and sink up in post.

You could go the route of Terminator 2 and just have people looping dialouge to the slow-mo version in post. That way you don't get tone changes in voice.

granted that would be hard not to laugh as actors are yelling stuff in slow-mo.
