Slow motion FCP setting

Hey guys,

I have a question. When I slow down a clip in my timeline, it automatically pushs all the other clips after it out. The converse when I speed things up. Is there a way to not have it push and pull and just slow down withing the duration that I already set? THANKS SO MUCH!

Hmmm. If I get what you are asking.... The duration has to change if the speed is changed. That is unless you extend or shorten the length of the original clip (but then the start or end points will be different from the original).

When you slow it down, the length has to be longer (since it is playing at a slower speed). FCP pushes the clips down accordingly so that the slowed clip does not over-right part of the next clip. You could always move the clip up one track before changing the speed so that it will not move the other clips, but you will still have to move things around to get it to fit back in at its new speed and length.

I haven't used it in so long, so you'll need to use your manual or Google to look up the proper usage, but to strictly answer the question I quoted above, simply use Fit to Fill. This may not give you the desired look you're going for, but it will adjust speeds without shifting other clips on the timeline forward or back.

Additionally, this very topic was discussed not to long ago on the forum. The general concensus of how to deal with this, by some of the more senior FCP users, is to simply create a 'garbage' sequence. In that sequence you can adjust the clips to your hearts content, trim it down to your desired length, and then cut it into your main sequence where you want it to go.

cheers.

First thing I do with any new editing project is to make a Sequence called, "Temp Work Space", just for this type of thing. It allows me to experiment and not mess up my working Sequence.

Double click the clip to open it in the Viewer. Switch to your temporary Sequence, drop the clip from the Veiwer into it. Slow it down, trim it up, you can even copy and paste the TC from the duration of the orininal clip. Then double click to to open the alterned clip into the View, go back to the original Sequence, Replace edit it back in.

Yeah, I also create a separate sequence - change the duration over there and then bring it back.

I really hope they would fix this thing some day

I'd love to see not a change in how it does speed changes, but an option added to the speed change dialog box that let's you force an out point to keep the clip at the same duration.

What's broken? You are asking FCP to take a clip you selected and put into the timeline and make it slow...or speed it up. It assumes that you want the same duration, since you chose those specific points. How is FCP supposed to know that you want to chop of the tail, or the head, of the clip? What if you don't want to?

I like BenB's solution, I use that often. But even MORE often I change the speed of the clip in the Viewer BEFORE I cut it into the sequence. Load the clip in the Viewer, Apple-J to get the speed change option, change the speed, then drop it into the timeline.

Viola!
