Slow Motion Crashing in Premiere

I have a bunch of shots for a production I am working on in slow motion using the Sony FS100 camera. Every time I am editing the clips, Premiere CS6 makes me "force quit the application" with a general error message. I am editing on a MacBook Pro 17inch. 8 GB Ram. with over 650 hard drive space free. I am using a portable 1TB external hard drive via USB with 900 GB free. I am wondering if the USB is slowing the transfer down to where it crashes? should I switch to firewire? or am I having a ram problem? If anyone has an answer to this problem, that would be great.

Are there clips in the timeline that reside on the external? If so try bringing them over onto the system drive, if you have the space.

It's recommended to have the system and media files on separate drives for ease of scrubbing and playback etc. But I've never had a crash when editing off one drive, just more timeline rendering needed for decent scrubbing and triming. And I have a 2010 MBP i7 8gig ram, and have done slo-mo AVCHD editing.

If you must use the external, make sure to use the fastest interface the drive has, hopefully eSATA. eSATA to Expresscard32 adapters are cheap now.

Hope this helps, and that Ann Bens (certified Adobe guru) chimes if I'm wrong in some way.

Try switch off the ME and try software rendering out there are issues with slow-mow in CS5.5 and 6 .

Thanks Craig. I run all my adobe stuff off one Lacie 2TB hard drive. Then my After Effects Cache off a 1 TB hard drive.
