Slow Motion, 24p, Output

I shot a project and wanted slow motion parts with my 24p footage, I wanted the smoothest slow motion so shot some parts in 30p and others at 60i. But what timeline do I use? 23.987 or 24 film? Also, I slowed it down to the recommened speed, but now what do I export it as - seeing that I have 30p, 24p, and 60i footage on one timeline? I wanted to print to a DV tape and burn to a DVD. Mpeg2 for 24 or just mpeg2?

I noticed flicker in the 60i parts until I applied color correction reset to none, but it still looks more choppy than smooth, in my opinion. I did shoot at 1/120 for the 60i parts.

Last and final q, at the last minute I changed my mind on some shots and did 30p where I didn't plan, how do I tell, what should it say in properties?

Lots of questions, I know, thanks in advance!

Oh, also, any recommendations on best way to shoot 24p and 60i footage so that it comes together better in post (color, etc). Thanks

Use the NTSC 24p project templates.

You export as 24p. There are templates under MPEG-2 and under AVI.

The 60i parts will be converted to 24p when you render; any flicker should be gone, and it should be smooth. Changing the effect to "reset to none" has no net effect.

30p footage will have a frame rate of 29.976 and the field order will be "none" or "progressive."

Shoot 24p and 60i at the same settings except for frame rate -- you already said that you used a shutter of 120, so that should even out the brightness.

if your final project is 24p ..
you can have 30p changed to 24p in AE and it retime the 30p to 24p = it will retain ALL the 30 fps and playback will be 24fps ( motion will be slower -clips will be longer) ... if you put 30p into Vegas ( 24fps time line) it will delete frames - playback is 24fps -motion will be same speed( little jerkey) ...Vegas does not retime clips .. it does convert 30p to 24p and 60i to 24p ( it deletes fields/frames) ..

Oh man! Davd, all I did was change the template to 24p (all this time, i was NOT doing that, instead manually putting progressive and probably messing up some settings) And now the slow motion plays back smoooooooth, and much closer to what I had pictured.

BIG THANKS to you sir! And donatello, thanks for the crash course in frame rates.

Slow-mo is cool. No wonder every music video uses it to death.

Don't try to convert 30p to 24p without changing 30p's speed, though. It makes a very smooth 80% slow motion in 24p, but if you try to convert it straight to 24p, the results will be . . . bad.

so how would you put 60i, 30p and 24p together on the same timeline without affecting the 60i and 30p frames. lets say i did some ramping with 60i and then next comes some 24p stuff? my final render is 24p on dvd. i can tell vegas to "disable resample" on the 60i and 30p footage right?

You can't. You will have to reinterpolate the footage which isn't of the same timebase.

60i converts well to 24p at about any speed because it has 2.5 times the motion resolution as 24p. But 30p doesn't do as well unless you line up each 30p frame 1 for 1 with each 24p frame in the timeline, which means slowing it down to 80%.
