slow 2.7 g5

I just bought a new dual 2.7 g5 and loaded my all awaited final cut studio on it and started to go to town. I have only really been working on the mac for 3 days now but have a little experience with them. I came from Vegas 5.0 so I know there is a learning curve that is to be expected. But I noticed things move around really slow and moving from fcp5 to soundtrack takes a long time. then soundtrack took 20 minutes to save a file before it closed. Is there something I need to do or is this normal. My old pc with vegas was only a amd1700 with 1gig ram and it seemed to go faster. I was watching the dvd with fc studio and that guys was alot faster. Am I just up in the night?

20 min to save!!! ..err.... doesn't sound right!!

Can you take it to you retailer and demonstrate the problem? Could be a million different things. I would get a refund and start again if it is really that bad and can't be fixed. It could be something really simple, but I'm not sure what.

How large are your files? Your edit station should be blazing fast. I have a 1.8MHZ system and it mooooooves.

That's why I think something is wrong. A dual 2.7 with 1.5 gigs of ram?
The one file im working with is 54min. but was correcting audio only. I felt this thing should be blazing fast also.

Im kinda having the same problem on my dual 2. im still running 512 of ram, ut im working with test clips of about 5-6 and its not moving to fast.
My old pc had a P4 with 512 and it moved fast.
Think i'll call apple in the morning :(

Do a repair permissions and make sure you don't have other things running.
Also make sure you have some disk space for the system.
Additional RAM is always nice.

You might want to update your system... and then you might want to turn off spotlight.. a good tool to use in diagnosing what your system is doing is the "Activity Monitor" in the Applications/Utilities folder... you probably have a process somewhere thats doing something its not supposed to, at the very least.

Your problem is most likely software related, if all else fails, or you don't feel like messing with anything, do a clean OS install, not an upgrade. Then run software update (its in the menu that has the apple) right below "About this Mac..." until your system is up to date.

I just started using a new dual 2.0. Switched from my PC 3.2 HT with 1gig. Well, My G5 seems slow also at some things so I upped the memory from 1gig to 4 gig. Some improvement but not what you would think. It does seem to run better with it set to Highest performance instead of auto in your energy savings settings. Renedering seems to be the biggest hurry up and wait item. But overall the software package is tops.

First of all what type of video are you dealing with in FCP?
Are you saving to the boot drive, another internal or an external?
Is your video and project file on the boot drive?

It shouldn't be slow at all. Definatley repair permissions and trash your preferences in FCP. Try a safe boot to rebuild the drive too. I just posted how in another thread.

If you are running a large project off of your boot drive, expect problems.

I have the same problem. If I right-click a clip (let's say 10 seconds) in the fcp-timeline and send it to soundtrack and I want it to "analyze"it, then it first makes a project of it. But soundtrack imports the whole tapelength of audiovideo instead of only the piece of 10 seconds I want to correct. And if you want it to save, it saves the whole captured tapelength footage.
Am I right?. If I'm right that's too bad because the longer the captured footage, is the longer everything will take.
I'm wondering only to audio correct that clip I want to correct and not the whole footage.

An update for FCP and Soundtrack just hit the Software Updater as of Today. Download it, then repair permissions and see if you problem has gotten any better or hopefully gone away.

I am going to update and see if it helps. Just hard goind from pc to mac and spending this kind of money and having concerns with performance. I was just hopeing this thing would edit and wipe my butt at the same time while pouring me a glass of water. (ha, ha)

g5 dual 2.7 1.5gb ram 1tb hard drive

p.s. there were 9 updates available.

awesomesean,

Try booting into safe boot, it will really speed up your system and keep everything running smoothly. I boot into safe boot probably twice a week, I've never had performance issues and I'm running 1 1/2 terabytes of media on 8 drives. Once systems get load normally you are asking for trouble, I'm a firm believer in preventive maintenance.
