Slide Projector Effect For Photos???

I am currently shooting a documentary and have a fair number of photos that I am going to have to show during it. I am trying to show the photographs in a somewhat creative way and would love to have them fly into the screen like they are being shown on a projector or as slides (not on a projectors screen). This was done in the film The Devil and Daniel Johnston most notably for me and probably others.

In DADJ, the film even went as far as when the image popped up (with the sound of a slide changing) the image was out of focus and went quickly into focus. I believe this was done in post, such as After Effects, rather than being shot this way.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to do this in post or some tutorials that may help me to get a start in the right direction....
 
I forget exactly how the transition looks between frames on a slide projector. Do you have a visual example you can post? That would help knowing exactly what you're looking to accomplish.

With the information you've given, the only thing I can think of is just keyframing a blur effect along with keyframing the position of the photos in and out of the frame. Or maybe aniimating a black shape/solid over the frame during the transition to simulate the projector changing slides.
 
I seem to remember them having sort of rounded edges, if you could create that effect and then just keyframe them to all slide in from one side and out the other you would probably be good, especially if you could find some sound to really sell the effect [edit: basically what the post above said - I'll read the responses too next time]. some blur as they come in and go off would be good too
