SLI better for unrendered preview?

Hello all,

I have been searching for a while but really haven't found the answer I seek. Basically, I want to know what will speed up my render times and what will make playback easier of unrendered HDV footage.

I know rendering out (final render or preview render) will utilize the CPU and not teh GPU but what about adding effects to a video clip and trying to play it back without rendering. It is system dependant but what parts of the system affect this?

Will a quad core with one very good video card play back slower then a quad core with two (SLI) very good video cards? Or is the playback performance dependant on how much processing power you have.

( I am also aware that RAM plays apart, but I'm trying to see if going with an SLI setup is warranted instead of just getting one card, ya know... if I will see no performance increase from a SLI setup)

Thanks

Chris

Well I have been searching and seems I have found an answer, or somewhat of an answer. It seems a high end GPU will improve playback and preview renders , but SLI is not supported, since the drivers do not support SLI mode when not in full screen mode ( like in games ).

This is true in AE, but still trying to find out about in PP 2.0 as far as time line playback. But if SLI isn't supported becuase of non full screen mode, then Im guessing the same is true for the NLE.
