"Sleepers" question?

So on boxing day I picked Sleepers up cheap along with a bunch of other flicks. I've seen this movie numerous times in my life and like it a lot.

Watched it last night, and clued in that the lead character in the movie was named Lorenzo Carcaterra - the writer of the book. Does anyone know if this movie is at all factually based on events that happened in his life? Educated guess is that the adult stuff is just a story, but ... heaven forbid, the childhood stuff, could it be factual?

Re: "Sleepers" question?

It looks as though that topic is a controversial one. Is it a true story or not? The writer claims it to be true (so the film must state it also). The author says he changed some names and events to protect their identity, but, because the author is reclusive, nobody knows the truth. Most good writers are also good at stretching the truth.

It's almost like "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." Most people believe the story to be a fabrication, but the author won't say. Sleepers is more believeable, but I'm sure some was exaggerated or even fabricated to help make for a good story.
