Sky Captain, so much potential

Wow, I know this is late and everyone prob saw the movie a year ago, but wow...this movie. I love LOVE the old Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers serials of the 30s and was really hyped to see this, not to mention its supposed stellar effects and digital locations. What I ended up with was a disappointment. One big experiment. Instead of attempting to make a film, they wanted to show off their computer skills. No attempt at a narrative, at least not a good one. This is what happens when you let really good post people with absolutely no directing experience direct.

Off topic, this film really needed besides a good writer, a better hero, and while on that subject some Full Heroic Scoring to boot. The music, blah. Wish they did it more tounge in cheek to the old serials it was born from.

i know what you mean. I also thought the sound mix was really flat. I guess they were trying to emulate the old sound design style but i felt very detached from it.

Re: Sky Captain, so much potential

I pretty much agree--it was disappointlingly thin eye candy. The writing was not up to par for a feature length film and there was hardly any plot. Most of those old serials had more substantial plots--*and* they were a lot shorter. Also, the film lacked one really important ingredient--a great villain!
