Skinning the proverbial cat :-)

I'm trying to put a Flash video in a skin so it will play in my web page. I can't find the right code.

I have the code for making the Flash video to play, but it won't stop, it's looping endlessly.

What's the code for a console? Help!

If you are using an instance of the FLVPlayback video component, given it the instance name "myVid", without a linked skin and want to be sure the video stops playing on completion, which it should do without this code, but:

myVid.complete = function(evtObj)
{
myVid.stop();
}

This was an ActionScript 2 example. Event listeners are set up manually in ActionScript 3.

thanks for the help

Here's the code I placed on my test page:

<!-- Auto generated with Flash Wizard -->
<center>
<OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,0,0" width=600 height=337> <PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="felliniesque3.swf">
<PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=High>
<PARAM NAME=bgcolor VALUE=#000000>
<PARAM NAME=menu VALUE=True>
<PARAM NAME=play VALUE=False>
<EMBED src="felliniesque3.swf" quality=Hight bgcolor=#000000 width=600 height=337 type="application/x-shockwave-flash" menu=True pluginspace="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></EMBED>
</OBJECT>
</center>
<!-- end of flash code -->

This code plays the swf video without stopping. But the worst problem is that there is no flash console to stop and start the video!

Here's the page:

Your swf file is over 15MB in size and took me just over a minute to download however I took a quick peek at your swf and I think this is what you are looking for:

Patience during download.

You should look at taking the original video and laying the soundtrack onto it in an NLE and then outputting directly or converting the output to FLV if NLE doesn't support directly and then linking it to an FLVPlayback component so it can stream to a tiny SWF. You can then skin the FLVPlayback component to any one of a few dozen from the popup list. I don't see why anyone would want to wait around until your massive SWF loads with everything embedded the way it is now. Once you've loaded the page from the link above go and look at the source code. You'll notice the change in dimensions to accomodate the controller objects and also the value of the play PARAM is set to true.

Wow, Craig, I don't know how to thank you :-)

Wow, Craig, I don't know how to thank you :-)

This is great! You have saved the day for me, man! I'm so excited :)

Ok, I'm trying to follow the rest. I'm using FCP 5.04 on G5 dual processors 2.7 gHz.

So I can copy the code on the page you provided. The console is great! I love it -- simple and effective ... and beautiful, the best console I've seen.

Alright, I know how to make FLVs, but I don't know how to embed them in a page and write the code for them to appear with a console.

I've been given consoles that I must buy; but I don't think that I have to do that. There must be Flash Consoles that are free, right?

I really appreciate the help, Craig. I've been pulling my hair out for two weeks (and I don't have hair :Drogar-Dum(DBG): )

When you link to my page and play the swf, the swf itself will get placed in the temporary internet files location of your browser. Go in there and copy it to your actual site location. Sometimes the name gets changed as your copy ie. a [1] gets added to the name to remove that and then overwrite your swf. Then you'll have the console.

I don't understand, Craig. I copied your html code and placed it in my own server. It plays my video but there is no console. I downloaded the .swf video clip from your page, but it's identical to mine without the console!

I don't get the download numbers rolling off, nor do I get the console. I get a Flash 9 video without the wrapper?

The console is in the .swf file. If your cache wasn't cleared before you linked then it may not have downloaded my swf.

you're right, Craig, I downloaded the .swf before it had downloaded completely.

Now, there is this aspect to figure out:

"You should look at taking the original video and laying the soundtrack onto it in an NLE and then outputting directly or converting the output to FLV if NLE doesn't support directly and then linking it to an FLVPlayback component so it can stream to a tiny SWF. You can then skin the FLVPlayback component to any one of a few dozen from the popup list. I don't see why anyone would want to wait around until your massive SWF loads with everything embedded the way it is now."

I don't know how to do all this. Can you explain it a bit more simply?

:-)
